England's highest mountain, deepest lake, smallest church, and biggest liar'

The parish of Wasdale Head is said to contain 'England's highest mountain (Scafell), deepest lake (Wast Water), smallest church (St Olaf's) and biggest liar'.... the latter accolade being given to a publican at the local hotel in the 19th Century. The 'Biggest Liar in the World' annual competition is now held in the area.

For the energetic, the area is ideal for high and low level walking (guided walks are available), fell running, climbing and cycling. Canoeing, rowing and diving can be enjoyed on Wast Water, although permits (and your own equipment) are required.

For the less energetic, there are a number of attractions in the area, including:

• Muncaster Castle - historic haunted castle with beautiful gardens, maze and owl centre
• Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway - travel by steam train along the valley from Ravenglass to Eskdale
• Sellafield Visitors Centre - insight into the work of BNFL and Sellafield
• The Rum Story
• Haig Colliery Mining Museum
• Gosforth Pottery - small pottery shop where you can also enjoy a pottery lesson

A little further a field are the towns of Keswick, Cockermouth, Maryport etc, with attractions such as:

• Cars of the Stars- museum of vehicles from film and television
• Trotters World of Animals
• Mirehouse - beautiful historic house and gardens
• Lake District Coast Aquarium
• Percy House - gallery exhibiting unusual arts and crafts
• Wordsworth House - Wordsworth's childhood home
• Indoor Karting- Indoor Gokartss in Cumbria, Lake District

There are cosy pubs in Nether Wasdale and at Wasdale Head with good food and beer, the Wasdale Head having it's own micro-brewery........and of course there is the rest of the lake district to explore.
